Summer Reading, Mah Jongg, and Ice Cream, Oh My!

Santa Barbara Public Library’s Summer Reading Program for all ages is well underway. Young readers equipped with their Reading Adventure Logs have been visiting us at Montecito Library to talk about the books they’re reading. Shiny beads are given for each book they talk about with staff, and some of our readers have amassed quite the collection! And be sure to join us on Saturday, July 25, for Montecito Library’s Ice Cream Social at Upper Manning Park, where young readers can pick up their Summer Reading prize packet. Teens and adults are busy exploring books “off their beaten reading path” thanks to prompts found in our Summer Reading Zine. SBPL book totes and a staff-designed sticker sheet are given to adults and teens just for signing up! (Available at Montecito Library only and while supplies last.)

Library on the Go (LOTG) New Stops! We’re excited to add two new LOTG stops: Summerland at Outlook Park (alternating Wednesdays) and Montecito YMCA (July 29 and August 12). Visitors can get library cards, check out books, learn how to use the library’s digital resources, or just chat with friendly library staff. Mah Jongg programs at Montecito Library continue to fill up quickly. These programs are generously sponsored by the Friends of the Montecito Library. The summer session of Learn to Play Mah Jongg for Beginners is full, but stay tuned for another round of classes in the fall. Mah Jongg Open Play sessions will run through October. 

We’re delighted to welcome back the UC Master Gardeners who will be presenting on Container Gardening. Participants will learn about the benefits of container gardening – even when ground soil space exists; topics covered will be the importance of correct potting mixes, fertilizers, right plant/right place determinations, drainage, and specifics on the kinds of edible plants that can successfully grow in containers.
