A Different Kind of Carpooler

By Les Firestein   |   May 18, 2026
Cartagena’s Carpoolers just wrapped a show at the SFMOMA but can still be found in the current Riv

By now you know the new issue of our Riv architecture and design mag looks closely at the migrant labor force that turns our architectural fantasies into built reality.

Alejandro Cartagena is an outstanding photographer who brilliantly aims his lens downward from a freeway overpass and has now spent decades chronicling the daily journey of migrant workers in pickup trucks on their way to build other people’s dreams. Cartagena’s aerial shots looking down on this human cargo are poignant and provocative and empathic and give new meaning to the term “truck bed.”

Cartagena has been an artist-in-residence at the SB Museum of Art and just had a retrospective hanging at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. You can also enjoy Cartagena’s work in the new Riv magazine. On racks and in mailboxes and on well-heeled coffee tables worldwide.
