On September 28, Cold Spring School was awarded and recognized by the nonprofit organization Common Sense Media as, a “Common Sense Media School.” “We’re honored to be recognized as a Common Sense School. Our students deserve to move through the digital world with confidence and care, today and for whatever comes next. This recognition reflects the work our whole community has put into making that happen,” said Cold Spring School Superintendent and Principal Dr. Amy Alzina.

Common Sense Media credits Cold Spring School for its commitment to “taking a whole-community approach to help students take ownership of their digital lives.” How that translates into everyday use of digital media and the AI landscape is to instill a culture that advocates for “looking at a social feed and seeing the algorithm behind it, telling reporting from opinion from advertising, and understanding the difference between using AI to think harder and using it to avoid thinking.”

We are in the age of digital literacy, which is now considered part of one’s well-being. Merve Lapus, VP of Education and Engagement of Common Sense Media, explains, “Digital literacy and well-being aren’t separate subjects; they’re woven into how students research, create, and make decisions every day, including how they use AI. We applaud the faculty and staff of Cold Spring School for treating those skills as essential. They’re giving students the judgment to participate thoughtfully in a world where the tools keep changing.”

Integrating Common Sense Media’s resources in the school pedagogy, Cold Spring School students, teachers, and parents learn about media literacy, digital citizenship, AI literacy, privacy, online kindness, and digital well-being.
