Sold Out Show of the Week: Roger That! And More Entertainment Matters
Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Roger McGuinn is the folk-rock pioneer with the Byrds (and the lesser-known successor McGuinn, Clark & Hillman). McGuinn has enjoyed a lengthy solo career, and is the latest pop music legend to grace the downtown theater with a career-spanning retrospective that goes beyond the music. Just a couple of weeks after the Who’s Roger Daltrey dished at the venue, “Songs and Stories with Roger McGuinn,” slated for Saturday, September 12, will touch on McGuinn’s six-decade legacy, which includes such memorable moments as introducing his jangly 12-string Rickenbacker guitar into the 1960s folk music ecosystem, and explaining the craft behind his songs. The intimate evening will likely feature “Mr. Tambourine Man,” “Turn! Turn! Turn!,” “Eight Miles High” and “Chestnut Mare,” but will also go beyond the hits to visit solo favorites and traditionals that reveal the musical crossroads that helped shape his singular sound.
SBIFF to be Blunt in December
The next edition of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival doesn’t take place until February 3-13, but the 19th annual Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film returns to the Ritz-Carlton Bacara on December 10, with Golden Globe and SAG winner and Academy Award nominee Emily Blunt receiving the prestigious honor. The black-tie event — which features a gourmet dinner and a star-studded program — is named after screen legend Kirk Douglas, who spent much of the last years of his life in Montecito. The event benefits SBIFF’s year-round educational programs.
