More than 200 guests gathered at the Michael Towbes Library Plaza for the inaugural Library Night Live, a sold-out celebration that transformed the heart of the Santa Barbara Public Library into an immersive evening of storytelling, performance, and community. The event raised more than $160,000 to support literacy programs serving children, families, and adults throughout Santa Barbara.

Designed to make the library itself the star of the evening, the fundraiser featured literary-themed cocktails from The Good Lion, wines from several local wineries, cuisine by Duo Catering, and interactive performances by Carpinteria Improv and Santa Barbara Improv. Creative installations by librarians and San Marcos Theater students, along with dramatic lighting and event design, transformed the Plaza into a vibrant cultural gathering space.

A highlight of the evening was a keynote address by Award-winning Author Matt de la Peña, whose reflections on storytelling, belonging, and the power of libraries drew both laughter and emotion from attendees. Guests also heard moving testimonials from participants in the Library’s literacy programs, underscoring the life-changing impact of reading and education.

Funds raised will directly support adult literacy services, early childhood reading programs, and outreach initiatives that expand access to learning opportunities across the community. Organizers hope the success of the inaugural event establishes Library Night Live as a signature annual celebration of literacy, creativity, and lifelong learning in Santa Barbara.
