The Birth Center at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital announced the arrival of baby Isla at 4:41 am on Thursday, January 1, 2026, making her the hospital’s first baby born in the new year. Isla is the first child of her parents, Jessica and Laurence. She weighed 9 pounds and measured 20.5 inches at birth.

While Isla’s arrival marks an exciting start to the new year, her parents went on record to share a quote from Frank Herbert’s novel Dune: “A beginning is the time for taking the most delicate care…” Hospital staff report that the family is doing well and enjoying time together following the baby’s arrival.
