Meet Neurologist Justin Abraham,MD MBA

What drives someone to spend a life in medicine? In this Q&A series, a group of leading local physicians share the moments that set them on their path, the breakthroughs shaping their fields, and the realities behind the work. Their answers are candid, occasionally surprising, and grounded in experience. Together, they offer a clear-eyed look at the people delivering care in our community and what continues to motivate them every day.
Q. What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine, and how did you select your particular specialty?
A. I was drawn to neurology because the brain is still so unknown – endlessly complex, still poorly understood, and central to everything that makes us human. Epilepsy specifically pulled me in because it sits at this fascinating intersection of electrophysiology, behavior, and lived experience. When a seizure happens, you’re watching the brain momentarily lose its own regulation. But we now know enough that not only are medications available – surgical and device-based treatments have genuinely given patients their lives back.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job – and the most challenging?
Improving how Sutter delivers neurological care to the entire Central Coast – not just one patient at a time. Being part of a large system gives us access to resources, research, and data we never would have had before. The challenge is translating all of that into actual patient care against a backdrop of constantly shifting insurance rules and government regulations.
If you weren’t a physician, what career could you see yourself in?
Strategic planning, financial modeling, operational design – I’m drawn to systems-level thinking and financial modeling. I do a lot of that work within our group already, given the operational work within the neuroscience service line. So a position like that wouldn’t be a huge leap.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
What’s not to love about wine country? Using our local wine club memberships is the best way to wind down after work. When my wife and I have the ability to travel outside of Santa Barbara, being able to return back to Chicago where we lived for seven years and exploring our old neighborhoods in Lincoln Park and River North. Seeking out great food and drink experiences – a well-curated sake list or a thoughtfully made omakase is a great evening. I also love my Southern California sports teams – there’s something about a great venue and an exciting atmosphere that just resets the brain.
Describe your perfect day off.
Waking up late, taking the time to make our own espresso in the morning – I’m really particular about my beans and my coffee bar setup – followed by a long walk with my wife and our Australian shepherd down to the park so he can play with his friends before we head up to Santa Ynez Valley to relax in the sun at of one of our wine clubs. Relaxing on the patio at home by the fire pit while the sun sets followed by dinner with a few friends over is a great way to end the day. Simple but perfect for us.
