“We all long for music’s emotional stories.”

That simple observation from Philip Sheegog set the tone for an extraordinary evening at Hahn Hall, where the 2017 Music Academy of the West alumnus returned alongside violinist Jonathan Miron as the Grammy-winning duo ARKAI.

Fresh off bringing Madison Square Garden to its feet during a halftime performance for the New York Knicks’ NBA playoff run, Philip and Jonathan arrived at Hahn Hall amid considerable buzz. Performing in the Summer Music Festival kickoff, they delivered electrifying string renditions of pop and rock favorites, while Philip’s futuristic 3D-printed carbon-fiber cello added to the spectacle.

“We’re bringing Montecito some New York energy!” he joked to the audience.

For Philip, it’s a remarkable homecoming. Since arriving at the Academy as a young cello fellow in 2017, he’s gone on to international acclaim with Jonathan, whom he met during a chance jam session at The Juilliard School in 2018. A Grammy win for “Brightside” earlier this year helped propel ARKAI from rising stars to international headliners.

Yet Philip’s focus remained on something more universal.

“We love creating an emotional journey – that’s what music truly is,” he told the audience. Even his original work, “Symphony X,” which he described as a modern “ode to the human spirit,” is an exploration of life’s emotional highs and lows. Before launching into the piece, he offered a simple instruction: “Buckle up and go on this wild emotional ride with us.”

The evening’s emotional peak arrived during ARKAI’s breathtaking rendition of Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence.” Bathed in dramatic red light, the duo transformed the classic into something hauntingly new.

“We all got goosebumps,” remarked one audience member. “That’s the best rendition we’ve ever heard!” Special thanks went to supporters Todd Gerber, David Sambrano, Mally Chakola, and Dean Jackson, who’re looking forward to the rest of the summer program.

For our music academy, it was a proud reminder that today’s fellows can become tomorrow’s stars.

The Knicks got the halftime show, but Montecito got the encore.
