Tease of a Muse

By Lisa Duncan
Downtown Santa Barbara was absolutely crackling with creative chemistry during 1st Thursday Art Walk, as the doors of “The Muse” briefly opened for a wildly glamorous sneak peek at what promises to become one of the sexiest cultural spaces our Eden by the Beach has seen in decades.
And darling, it was less “construction preview” and more architectural seduction.
For one deliciously fleeting evening, guests stepped inside the future downtown home of the Music Academy of the West, set to officially open in 2028 at 901 State Street. The crowd buzzed excitedly as renderings and plans revealed a bold new vision for the city – one already inspiring architectural infatuation.
Designed by acclaimed architect Lawrence Scarpa and Brooks Scarpa Huber, the project arrives with serious pedigree. Scarpa is recipient of the prestigious 2022 American Institute of Architects Gold Medal – the profession’s highest honor – which, frankly, is the architectural equivalent of royalty. This man doesn’t merely design buildings; he causes swooning.
And swoon they did.

Inside, guests admired glowing renderings of a sculptural interior inspired by the movement of music itself. Flowing ribbons of warm wood wrap the performance space like a symphony in motion, creating what Scarpa describes as a “jewel box” – understated outside, but filled with surprise, drama, and discovery within. Mayor Randy Rowse simply remarked, “Stunning.”
But the real flirtation of the evening was the reveal of the planned rooftop deck.
Future parties high above downtown will feature panoramic skyline views – the sort of rooftop destined for champagne, string quartets, and dangerously charming people lingering far too late into the night.
The evening carried the intoxicating thrill of seeing Santa Barbara’s future before everyone else does.
Then, just as Santa Barbara began swooning, the doors closed and locked once more – leaving the city seduced until 2028. Positively wicked, really.
