Sending Support

Casa Dorinda is hosting its annual Scholarships Awards ceremony next week.

Every year the tony retirement home raises scholarships for staff members and their families.

This year they are honoring more than 40 scholarship recipients and celebrating a record-breaking $217,000 in scholarship rewards.

Since its establishment in 1997, the scholarship fund, in partnership with the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara, has been a beacon of hope for staff members and their families.

Collectively, over 800 scholarships have been awarded, totaling an impressive $2,100,000 to students, enabling them to pursue their educational dreams.

Green in the White

Montecito actor Don Johnson, 75, has admitted to smoking a joint in the White House.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! the former Miami Vice star was shown a 1975 photo of himself with President Jimmy Carter and the Allman Brothers at a concert.

“I don’t remember the photo, but we were all stoned,” he said, adding that Carter was likely not.

Johnson said he was invited to the White House after working with the Allman Brothers on a concert for Carter’s presidential campaign in 1976.

“There the fun began,” he admitted…

A Mindful Stroll

Alma Rosa Winery’s sixth annual Peace of Mind: 10,000 Steps in the Right Direction fundraising walk raised a total of $256,285, surpassing previous walks in both attendance and funds raised, bringing (to date) the total amount raised to over $1.2 million.

All proceeds benefit One Mind and Santa Barbara County’s Mental Wellness Center.

The winery’s owners Bob and Barb Zorich launched the annual Peace of Mind fundraising walk in 2020 to support community services for mental health, as well as research of the causes, treatment, and potential cures for mental health diseases.

Last month around 275 participants gathered at the base of Alma Rosa’s 628-acre estate to participate in this year’s 10,000 step, 4.5 mile walk across the hillside vineyards.

Prett-ay, Prett-ay, Prett-ay Chuppah

Montecito actor Larry David made a surprise appearance when Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen tied the knot with Hollywood actress Hailee Steinfeld in our rarefied enclave.

The 77-year-old Brooklynite was rather conspicuous among the guests at the San Ysidro Ranch.

He is reportedly a customer of Los Angeles trainer Peter Steinfeld, Hailee’s father.

Feline Friends

Santa Barbara warbler Katy Perry has earned her stripes in the antipodes.

Katy, who is on a month-long tour of Australia during her Lifetimes world trip, posted a video on Instagram showing her making a nighttime visit to Sydney’s zoo and meeting a tiger.

In the clip Katy, 40, held a piece of steak in her hand and passed it to the big cat through the chain linked fence

“Oh my gosh,” she exclaimed. “I’ve never had a tiger lick my hand… It’s a great way to beat jet lag!”

Remembering Barney Brantingham

On a personal note, I remember veteran writer Barney Brantingham, who has died at the age of 93.

A longtime scribe for the News-Press he quit the daily during the “News-Press mess” and started with the Santa Barbara Independent.

He and his late wife Sue became good friends and we would often meet at Pierre Lafond.

A talented journalist and great character.
