Good Persons

It was all very in-tents. The Hilton rotunda was socially gridlocked and covered in a marquee when licensed psychologist Dr. Carrie Towbes, and lifelong conservationist George Burtness were selected as the 82nd Persons of the Year, with the Santa Barbara Foundation as the organizing sponsor – and legacy the occasion’s unspoken theme. Burtness’ father was a previous honoree, and both of Carrie Towbes’ parents were onetime recipients of the honor.
Carrie was introduced by Dr. Gabriella Garcia, executive director of Storyteller, while George’s introduction was by Ron Werft, president emeritus of Cottage Heath. George Burtness volunteered more than 4,600 hours at Cottage Hospital.
“Both awardees this year truly embody what it means to show up for the community, to spend years dedicating time and expertise to advance well-being in Santa Barbara, and to enrich life and increase opportunities for all of us,” Jackie Carrera, president and CEO of the foundation explained.
Among the many supporters were Janet Garufis, mayor Randy Rowse, Peter Schuyler, David Selberg, Sigrid Wright, Penny Jenkins, Palmer Jackson Jr., Greg Gorga, Geoff Green, Mindy Denson, John Daly, Caren Rager, Laura Capps, Scott Reed, Kathryn Martin, and Bob Bryant.
